What is a Double eyelid surgery?

Double eyelid surgery, sometimes referred to as Asian Double Eyelid Surgery or East Asian Blepharoplasty, is a type of cosmetic eyelid surgical procedure in which an upper eyelid crease is created. Whereas standard blepharoplasty is commonly utilized to correct conditions such as droopy eyelids with excess skin or under eye bags that may be interfering with day-to-day activity, a double eyelid procedure is typically performed to create an eyelid crease when one is not present, usually for cosmetic reasons. Some individuals are born without eyelid creases and have what is referred to as a single- or mono-lid. Although there is nothing medically wrong with either, this procedure is one of the most common procedures performed in East Asia. Some common reasons for wanting this procedure are:

  • Eyelids are interfering with vision

  • One eyelid is double and one is single

  • To help make eyes appear larger

Procedure options and commonly paired procedures:

There are two main types of double eyelid surgery: cutting/open method and non-cutting/suture method. Both involve a permanent, usually reversible, internal suture. The type of procedure performed usually depends on the individual’s anatomy, as well as whether or not it will be paired with other procedures. Double eyelid is most commonly performed with upper and/or lower blepharoplasty, medial and/or lower canthoplasty, brow lift, face lift, and/or fat grafting to various areas of the face.

Treatable conditions:

  • Upper eyelid surgery can remove excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids.

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision, can be treated by eyelid lift surgery.

  • Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can remove excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid.

  • Bags under the eyes can be corrected by blepharoplasty.

  • Lower eyelid surgery can correct droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye).

Is it right for me?
Double eyelid surgery, or a combination of the above mentioned procedures, can be performed on men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles and have realistic goals for improvement of the upper and/or lower eyelids and surrounding area.

You should consider these surgeries for yourself and not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image.

Good candidates for cosmetic eyelid surgery are:

  • Healthy individuals who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing

  • Non-smokers

  • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for blepharoplasty

  • Individuals without serious eye conditions
